USA: gypsum production increased by 11% in 2012%
According to a report by the United States Geological Survey, in 2012, total gypsum production in the United States amounted to 9.9 million tons and, thus, increased by 11% compared to 2011 (8.9 million tons).
The USGS attributes this increase to increased activity in the US housing construction sector and confirms this explanation with figures: domestic gypsum consumption also increased from 23.7 to 24.6 million tons, or by 4%.
According to the report, the US gypsum industry is represented by 47 companies with 54 mines and factories in 34 states. It is characteristic that, just as in Russia, about 90% of industrial consumption of gypsum is accounted for by the production of gypsum boards and other building structures.
The USGS notes that the United States is the fourth largest producer of gypsum in the world, and the fastest growing gypsum industry is in Asia, where it is driven by high demand for gypsum structures and the construction of new gypsum plants.
The Geological Survey predicts further growth in global gypsum production due to the increasing popularity of gypsum structures and products that are conquering the construction market due to their cost-effectiveness, efficiency and environmental friendliness.
It was also noted in the report that the construction of plants for the production of structures made of synthetic gypsum obtained by flue gas desulfurization may lead to a decrease in the production of natural gypsum.
