BASF technologists have developed Microal® PCM variable phase drywall. The new material is designed to create comfortable conditions in rooms that are excessively heated. This promising development can serve as an alternative to energy-intensive air conditioning systems. The structure of drywall includes the material Micronal PCM.

When the temperature rises, this material is activated, it begins to absorb and accumulate excess heat, which allows you to maintain a comfortable temperature in the room for a long time. At night, when the temperature drops, the reverse process of releasing accumulated heat occurs. This effect is achieved by microscopic polymer capsules Micronal PCM with a paraffin core, which begin to melt at approximately 23 °C, which leads to heat absorption.

The new drywall performs the task of intelligent temperature management without energy costs and regular maintenance, which distinguishes it from air conditioning systems. Another solution may be to combine the new product with air conditioning: in this case, the cost of the air conditioning system is also reduced, and it becomes possible to use a less powerful, more compact and cheaper system. Thanks to the microscopic size of the Micronal PCM granules, it is also possible to create other materials using them, in particular, plasters.

Marko Schmidt, Head of Micronic PCM Product Development and Implementation at BASF: "Drywall boards are a standard building material that is used in almost all construction projects-whether they are new construction or renovation projects - these boards are used for ceilings, attics and wall decoration. Thus, the use of Micronal PCM material will not lead to the need for additional work or to an increase in costs. But at the same time, the consumer gets a significant gain in improving the energy efficiency of the building, which is very important when protecting the building from excessive summer heat."
