The Gypsum Association (USA) has developed an Environmental Declaration for Drywall
In October, the Gypsum Association announced a previously missing set of Product Category Rules (PCR) for drywall boards. At the moment, the developed rules are in full compliance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Immediately after the publication of the drywall regulations, the Gypsum Association signed a contract to develop an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which was completed in the spring of 2014. According to lead developer FPInnovations, a Canadian company involved in the implementation of both projects, such a declaration is an effective, LCA-based tool for providing transparent and reliable data on the environmental impact of a particular product. This will allow you to effectively compare drywall boards from different manufacturers. Once developed, the declaration will always allow you to compare not only drywall boards with each other, but also with non-gypsum building materials that have the same declarations.
Representatives of the Gypsum Association note that now the Environmental Declaration is mainly used by manufacturers of materials for non-residential construction, while accurate information on the environmental indicators of materials for residential buildings is much less. Having developed relevant documents for plasterboard boards, which are one of the main materials of residential construction, and continuing the same work with other types of materials, the Association intends to change the situation with the assessment of environmental friendliness of housing.
